50-Years Later, A Look Back at Nation's First Black Mayor

Indiana University Northwest Calumet Archives

GARY - Gary is known the world over for two things: as the Steel City and the place where the nations first black mayor took office. The commemoration of that event fifty-years ago this year, will be the focus of a major celebration here in Gary in November.

Steven Lattimore has more on what the election of the nation's first black mayor meant then and for generations of mayors who followed.

Columbia College Alumni Steven Lattimore has been a broadcast journalist since 1988, starting his career in Greenville, Mississippi as a television reporter.
