Upcoming Graduations will cause an increase in traffic on many Region roadways during the first week of June. Crown Point and Merrillville High Schools will be hosting their respective graduations at the Star Plaza off of US 30.
Merrillville’s graduation ceremony is expected to have over 2,200 people in attendance, on Thursday, June 1st. With a heightened number of people on the road, in addition to rush hour, traffic is expected to affect local Highways I-65, U.S 30 and Delaware Street. Tuesday, June 6 will be a similar situation with over 2,400 expected at the Star Plaza for Crown Point's graduation. INDOT Spokesman Doug Moats said, the I-65 patching project between US-30 & the toll road South Bound will cause some traffic headaches.
"All traffic will be able to get through," Moats said. "Although they may experience some lane restrictions. So just allow yourself some extra time as you travel to your venue and you should be okay."
Between 5pm and 7pm on Thursday, June 1st and Tuesday, June 6th, for anyone not attending the graduation ceremonies, it's recommended to take alternate routes and avoid heading towards the Star Plaza Theater.
