Today: It's another Reporters' Round Table discussion of the big news stories of the week here in northwest Indiana.
Times of Northwest Indiana health and healthcare business reporter Giles Bruce, Post-Tribune reporters Carole Carlson and Carrie Napoleon and Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations education reporter Claire Mcinerny join us to talk about the stories and issues.
They include the local opioid epidemic and new federal funding on the way to help fight the crisis -- Lake County government improvement project funding and replacing more than 1,300 electronic voting machines before the next big election cycle -- and the upcoming Lake Station City Council decision to sell its municipal water utility to Indiana-American Water Co.
The reporters also talk about the May 2 school district voter referendums in Lake Station, East Chicago and Munster and how the Hobart public school district is taking a proactive approach to telling voters about the improvements it needs to make and how much they'll cost property taxpayers.
McInerny also talks about education-related bills before Indiana legislators this past session, including State Senator Eddie Melton's measure that, he hopes, will guide the Gary Community Schools Corporation toward a more fiscally-sound condition.
