The Lake County Sheriff's Department is partnering with the Indiana University Fairbanks School of Public Health and the Indiana state Department of Health to set up a special screening program inside the County Jail.
Lake County Sheriff John Buncich came on "Regionally Speaking" on Monday to explain how his Jail medical staff will find and document any inmates -- either at the Intake Center or inside the Jail itself -- who have HIV or Hepatitis C. Many have contracted the viruses through illegal intravenous drug use.
Shcriff Buncich says about 400 inmates will be screened, with their consent, educated and directed to healthcare professionals if they are found to be infected.
