On today's show, we welcome into the studio Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott Jr., not only to talk politics and challenging issues facing the region, but also to give listeners a peek into his personal life.

In a segment we call “Inside the Lakeshore Studio,” Karen and I barrage well-known guests and public officials with offbeat and unconventional questions. Our previous guest was Speros Batistatos, president and CEO of the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority. For instance, I’ll ask Mr. Mayor if he ever filters his often inflammatory social media posts, if he is seriously eyeing U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky’s job.

And I will ask if he has any silly superstitions or irrational fears, among my list of other unusual questions for him. If YOU have a question for Mr. Mayor, call in right now at 769-9577.

Later in the show, we’ll explore the musical phenomenon of “one hit wonders” and their lasting appeal in our pop culture. Yet these musicians must have thought, at the time, that their song would be the beginning of something great.

Instead, they enjoyed only a brief moment of fleeting fame. Again, we know this. They likely didn’t. At least not for a while until the eventual reality crushed or curbed their hopes.

I wonder about this situation when I hear songs such as “Come On Eileen” by Dexy's Midnight Runners, “Mickey” by Toni Basil or “I'm Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred. I wonder how badly they’d like to return to those glory days of intoxicating promise, rather than the sobering reality of becoming a one-hit musical footnote.

Also, what common thing have you never done or owned? Something that makes you feel different, maybe to the point of weird? Jerry asked these questions to his social media world and they admitted some very interesting “never’s.” We will reveal theirs and ask for yours.
