Eve Pytel, Delta Institute

Today:  an extended conversation with Eve Pytel of Delta Institute, the Chicago firm that created "Steel City Salvage" which works with specially-trained contractors to assess and deconstruct abandoned houses in the city of Gary and re-purpose the materials taken out of the homes.

Pytel says there are more training sessions planned to bring more qualified Gary-based contractors into the program.  Right now, work is underway on homes in the Aetna neighborhood, but Eve says more neighborhoods will be targeted as contractors get trained.

"Steel City Salvage" is working with a 2016 Knight Cities Challenge grant in Gary issued by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

This is National School Choice Week and there are more than 400 separate events across Indiana to give Hoosier parents the opportunity to see the entire range of educational opportunities for their children -- from traditional public schools to charter schools to private schools.  Shelby Doyle of National School Choice Week joins us to talk about the program.

"Counter Point" host Garrard McClendon and his guests talk about the Gary Community Schools on this week's program on Lakeshore Public Television.  The GCSC faces tens of millions in debt, a tax levy in question and declining enrollment to go along with declining city population.

A state-appointed financial manager who worked on the Detroit Public Schools' financial crisis is assisting Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Pruitt in creating a plan of action for her school district.

"Counter Point With Garrard McClendon" airs Fridays at 9:00 p.m. on Lakeshore Public Television and is repeated Sundays at 10:00 a.m.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
