We offer an in-depth look at the Hammond City Court closing issue, in comments made by the public and City Council members before last night's vote. The Council voted 6-3 to approve an ordinance sponsored by Councilman David Woerpel and supported by the McDermott administration to close the court on December 31, 2018. There were several passionate pleas, made before the Council vote at a public hearing, by users and supporters of the City Court to keep it open.
Megan Sikes of the Lake Area United Way talks about Monday's MLK Day of Service activities. State Senator Eddie Melton (D-Gary) is teaming up with the United Way for this years' volunteering event, moving the Region closer to Dr. King's vision of "a beloved community."
