Regionally Speaking, Thursday, January 5, 2017

WFYI Public Radio

Today:   Patrick DeHaan of GasBuddy.com says we can expect higher gasoline and diesel fuel prices in 2017 -- and he gives us the reasons why.

We also talked with Lake County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center assistant director Jessica Petalas-Hernandez about the temporary quarantine in place right now due to the canine flu -- and with Rachel Delaney of the Humane Society Calumet Area about the canine and feline flu outbreak they experienced last year, and how they dealt with it.

Donna Stuckert of Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction joins us for an update on several events and activities now underway.

We bring you remarks from Mike Noland of NICTD, Sherry Diller of the RDA and Hammond Mayor Tom McDermott Jr. as they got ready to speak at Thursday's breakfast meeting called by "One Region" to talk about the South Shore Line's expansion projects.

And -- an update on the area of the former Radisson Hotel at Star Plaza in Merrillville.  A chain link fence is now in place around the former hotel site, in preparation for demolition in a couple months.  Star Plaza Theatre CEO Charlie Blum says the theatre will remain open even after the hotel is replaced with a new facility, but he tells us that it's an entirely different experience to come to work now.

Chris Nolte produces and hosts “Regionally Speaking” aired weekdays from noon to 1:00 p.m. He's also the temporary local "Morning Edition" host.
