The St. John police officer accused of shooting at an off-duty Hammond police officer has resigned. Officer Philip J. Fabian's resignation was accepted by the St. John Board of Safety Monday.
"He found out and was understanding what was going to happen tonight, that we were looking for approval to terminate his probationary period," Police Chief Steven Flores told board members Monday. "So I spoke to him last night, and he submitted a letter of resignation that was effective today at 12:00 noon."
Fabian has been charged with a Level 6 felony count of criminal recklessness and a Class A misdemeanor count of criminal mischief, in connection with the November shooting.
The board of safety also agreed to let the police chief offer the open position to the next candidate on the department's list. Flores noted that the individual would be joining from another police department, and a background check would be conducted.
