The board that oversees the South Shore Line has a couple new members.
Valparaiso Mayor Matt Murphy has been appointed to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District Board by Governor Eric Holcomb. Murphy is set to represent Porter County on the board through May of 2026. He replaces former Porter County Commissioner Jeff Good.
In a statement Monday, Murphy said he looks forward to serving on the board, adding that "the growth of NICTD services translates into added opportunities for Northern Indiana residents, businesses and visitors." While the South Shore Line doesn't pass through Valparaiso, the city says it's "an active partner with NICTD," as it continues working on a transit-oriented development district and works to "advance the interests of communities" along the commuter rail line.
The governor has also appointed St. Joseph County Commissioner Carl Baxmeyer to the NICTD Board through May of 2027. He took over the seat last year, after the resignation of Commissioner Andy Kostielney.
Jim Arnold will continue to represent LaPorte County on the board through May of 2025.
