Valparaiso Community Schools is looking to recognize graduates who've gone on to serve in the armed forces. A Valparaiso High School "Military Hall of Honor" will be installed in the school's main hallway.
Superintendent Dr. Jim McCall says the 40-by-12-foot exhibit will include metal plaques for each branch of the armed forces, each with space for more than 500 name plates. There will also be a separate display featuring the oath of enlistment and pictures of service members in action.
"The exhibit . . . will serve as a reminder of our freedoms and of the men and women in uniform who guard those freedoms to all those who walk the halls of Valparaiso High School," McCall told the school board last week.
Anyone can submit a name through an online portal on the school's website. McCall said more than 50 submissions were made just in the first day.
"I really hope that we can go all the way back to the Spanish-American War or World War I," he added.
School officials hope to unveil the Military Hall of Honor in May. Additional names would then be added twice each year: in May for Military Appreciation Month and November for Veterans Day.
