Hammond, Gary and East Chicago are getting federal funding to help reduce traffic fatalities. The cities have been awarded grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All program, part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
U.S. Representative Frank Mrvan (D-Highland) expressed his appreciation on the House floor Wednesday. "I'm grateful for all the leaders and public servants in these for putting in the work to successfully obtain and utilize this new federal resource," Mrvan said.
As part of the grant program, East Chicago will get $240,000, Gary will get $140,000 and Hammond will receive $80,480. They'll use that money to put together "city-wide comprehensive safety action plans" with the aim of eliminating roadway fatalities, according to Mrvan's office.
