Governor Eric Holcomb is asking the General Assembly to invest in the Gary/Chicago International Airport.
"We'll be looking to support Gary, Indiana, but Gary Airport's cargo development projects," Holcomb said while presenting his 2023 Next Level Agenda on Wednesday.
Holcomb's proposed budget includes about $9.8 million to build an on-site fuel distribution facility.
The airport said in a statement that it already has lower fuel costs than many of the other airports in the Chicago area, but the need to bring in jet fuel by truck has been a long-term challenge. Executive Director Dan Vicari said the fuel distribution facility would reduce the airport's exposure to market fluctuations and would help increase its capacity.
In a separate statement, State Senator Eddie Melton said, "Building on the region's existing transportation infrastructure is an ongoing priority," and that he looks forward to making sure the funding makes it into the final budget.
