A former Northwest Indiana lawmaker has gotten one of the state's highest honors. Former State Senator Dennis Neary was presented a Sagamore of the Wabash award last week at the Indiana Statehouse.
Neary was first elected to the Senate in 1976. He became the Senate Democratic leader in 1988, before retiring in 1992.
Republican State Representative Michael Aylesworth (R-Hebron) presented the award on behalf of Governor Eric Holcomb. Aylesworth said in a statement that "Neary worked to improve education and human services issues" during his time as a lawmaker, and was "instrumental in forming the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District" — maintaining commuter rail service in the Region.
Neary says "It feels good to get recognized for working hard" because that's what he thinks legislators should be doing.
