Upgrades may be coming to 61st Avenue in Merrillville in the coming years. Town Manager Pat Reardon says the town plans to apply for funding to upgrade the road from Taft Street to the Hobart border.
"So vision if you will, 61st Avenue looking like, similar to 93rd Avenue," Reardon told the town council Wednesday.
The project could include a roundabout at Taft, and Town Engineer Steve King said it would also involve aesthetic upgrades. "Ornamental lighting, planters, things like that, illuminated signs as they need to be, intersection improvements, modernizing all that stuff — those are conversations we've had," King explained.
TIF money could be used for the town's share of the cost. Reardon said Merrillville is also seeking planning funding to explore a possible extension of 93rd Avenue from Mississippi to Colorado. Any work on either project would be several years away.
