State trooper hurt in multi-vehicle crash on I-94

photo provided by Indiana State Police

A four-vehicle crash on I-94 ended with a jackknifed semi and sent a state trooper to the hospital Monday. Indiana State Police say Master Trooper Jeff Council was called to eastbound I-94 in Portage around 1:30 p.m., after a vehicle crashed after driving through high water.

As he was sitting in his police car, a 2021 Kia drove through the same standing water. Police say that caused the driver of the Kia to lose control and spin into the path of a semi, which, in turn, caused the Kia to hit the police car. Then, the semi jackknifed and also hit the police car and a 2009 Nissan Frontier.

Master Tooper Council had to be removed by emergency responders and was taken to Porter Regional Hospital. None of the other drivers were hurt.

State Police say this is the sixth crash this year in which a trooper from the Lowell post was hit by another vehicle, while in or near their police car. Troopers remind drivers to slow down and change lanes when approaching stopped emergency vehicles and to slow down on slippery roadways.
