The Lake Central School Corporation is reporting a slight drop in enrollment. September's official count showed 9,094 students, a decrease of 134 from last fall.
Director of business services Rob James says the current sophomore and junior classes both lost students from last year, but the bigger concern is smaller groups of children starting kindergarten. "The good thing is that we see this with our demographics, and based on that, we can project going forward and know what our position is going to be, based on that," James told the school board Monday.
But while enrollment is down, James said the amount of state funding is up, since the Indiana General Assembly added more funding per student during its last budget session.
The school board approved a $125 million budget for 2023. It includes a $66 million education fund where teacher salaries are budgeted, and a $25 million operations fund.
