An Illinois man is dead after a police chase apparently ended with a crash into a high school football stadium in Michigan City.

Indiana State Police say it began around 8:00 p.m. Thursday, when city police officers noticed a vehicle driving east in the westbound lanes of Michigan Boulevard. Police say the driver refused to stop, and the pursuit continued onto southbound Washington Street.

But when he reached the end of the road, officers say the vehicle hit the concrete pillars, went airborne into the brick wall surrounding Ames Field, and came to rest under the bleachers. The driver, Grant J. Grable, 18, of Bourbonnais, had to be extricated from the vehicle, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The Michigan City Police Department has asked the Indiana State Police to investigate the crash and reconstruct the scene.
