Cherie True questions the Lake Central School Board about a classroom poster during the board's Sept. 19 meeting.

The two Lake Central School Board members who are up for reelection were asked to weigh in on the contents of a classroom poster.

Parent Cherie True raised the issue during Monday's school board meeting. "These statements are highly political and inflammatory statements, and this is allowed to hang in one of our high school classrooms," True said.

"It says, 'Science is real. Black lives matter. Love is love. Feminism is for everyone. Humans are not illegal, and kindness is everything.'" Superintendent Dr. Larry Veracco read from the poster.

True said she didn't think her kids should be taught those things in school, and she felt teachers should be teaching students how to think, instead of telling them what to believe.

Veracco said he doubted that the poster's contents were being taught as part of the curriculum. "I think there are signs that are up around the building, just to try to get people to be kinder and gentler towards one another, which I think we certainly need right now. So if we can be nicer to each other, if those messages promote kindness, I'm all for it," Veracco said.

True repeatedly refused to specify in which classroom the poster was found.

As for the two board members on November's ballot, Nicole Kelly said she agreed with the idea that kindness is everything, while Howard Marshall said he'd wait to comment until the next meeting.

Meanwhile, there were no public comments on the proposed 2023 budget.
