Gary Mayor Jerome Prince announces the launch of Operation Safe Zone at U.S. Steel Yard on June 16.

A new website will make it easier for Gary residents and business owners to register their surveillance cameras with the Gary Police Department. ConnectGary.org lets residents register their cameras, so investigators know where they can find surveillance footage if they need it. But businesses can go a step further and sign up for the "camera integration system," which gives officers real-time access to their camera feeds.

It's part of the city's new Operation Safe Zone initiative. During last week's State of the City address, Mayor Jerome Prince said it's a way to address the large amount of crime at businesses that are open late at night.

"In light of these statistics, the Gary Police Department, along with the city and the Office of Violence Prevention, launched this public-private community effort centered on developing real-time surveillance and having increased police connections," Prince said.

In a statement Wednesday, Prince urged residents and business owners to join Operation Safe Zone to help improve public safety and promote Gary's revitalization.
