One of Gary's architectural landmarks will be able to make some upgrades. St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church is one of nine sites to get funding in the latest round of grants from the Stan Cox funds, according to Indiana Landmarks.
The church was built in 1959. It was designed by Modernist architect Edward Dart, who later designed Chicago's Water Tower Place, along with a number of churches and private homes. Indiana Landmarks says St. Augustine’s will use the $14,500 grant to install a high-efficiency furnace.
Stan Cox was Eli Lilly's first Black chemist. Before his death in 2019, he established two funds at the Central Indiana Community Foundation to support the preservation and maintenance of sites significant to Indiana's African American history. Applications for the next round of grants are due April 1, 2023.
