Unemployment rates continue to move higher in Northwest Indiana. Lake County's unemployment rate rose to 5.2 percent in June, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development — one percentage point higher than it was in May. Porter County's rate went from 2.7 to 3.4 percent.
Lake County no longer has the state's highest unemployment rate at the county level. North Central Indiana's Howard County has taken the lead at 6.5 percent. But some local cities — like Gary and East Chicago — continue to surpass that.
While the number of Northwest Indiana residents employed went down slightly, more people appear to be looking for work, and unemployment rates are down significantly from June of 2021.
