Valparaiso city government buildings will soon be getting solar panels. The city's board of works and utilities board have selected Solar Energy Solutions to install solar arrays at a cost of more than $780,000 dollars.
City services executive director Steve Poulos says that cost will be split between the city itself and its utilities division. "It's going to be 873 solar panels with a payback of a little over eight years, and the cumulative savings based on the life of those panels will be $4.6 million to the city and its ratepayers and taxpayers," Poulos told the rest of the board of works last week.
Valparaiso will also be eligible for NIPSCO credits if it generates more power than it uses. Poulos previously said the solar panels will be installed at City Hall, the City Services Building, and the three treatment plants.
