Gary Mayor Jerome Prince is promising "to do whatever is necessary to reduce violence," following Tuesday's shooting that left three people dead, including a member of his own family. Prince's cousin, Marquise Hall, 26, was among those killed during what police believe was a holiday block party in the 1900 block of Missouri Street.
Prince said in a statement that his "family is heartbroken and outraged at this loss," but they're "also angry and frustrated at the fact we continue to lose Gary residents to needless violence, including young people gunned down before they even reach adulthood."
Another victim of Tuesday's shooting, Laurence Mangum, 25, is being remembered as a musician who regularly played the drums at several area churches, according to the Times.
Prince says his administration is investing in anti-violence initiatives focusing on violence intervention and prevention for younger residents. State Senator Eddie Melton tweeted Tuesday that his "fight to expand gun safety measures will not stop until [his] residents can safety enjoy a holiday without fear of senseless gun violence."
