A Milwaukee man was arrested Monday afternoon after allegedly leading police on a chase on the Indiana Toll Road, shooting at a state trooper, causing a wrong-way crash and jumping naked into the Little Calumet River.
Indiana State Police say it began around 3:20 p.m. on the Toll Road, when a trooper stopped to check on what he believed to be a disabled vehicle near Calumet Avenue, but he noticed the 1993 Ford Escort didn't have a license plate. That's when officers say the driver sped away and a pursuit began.
Police say the Ford led police through Hammond before getting back on the Toll Road and heading east to Cline Avenue where the driver exited, made a U-turn, shot at the trooper and began heading eastbound in the Toll Road's westbound lanes. A short time later, police got reports of a crash and a man fleeing with a handgun. Multiple agencies joined in the search, before troopers say they found the man naked under a bridge; then, he jumped into the Little Calumet River while holding a handgun.
After what police say was "an extended amount of time in the water," the suspect, identified as Carlos R. Santiago, 38, was taken into custody. Officers say he was wanted for questioning in connection with an investigation in Milwaukee, and additional charges are pending.
