The city of Gary is looking to coordinate surveillance efforts to try to reduce gun and gang violence.
Operation Safe Zone will let businesses and other organizations share their security camera feeds with the Gary Police Department during emergencies, according to a city press release. That will allow officers to respond more quickly. Officials say multiple businesses have already signed up, and they expect it'll soon be up and running in many apartment complexes, schools, gas stations and restaurants.
Mayor Jerome Prince said in a statement that the recent tragedies in the city due to gun violence highlight the need to strengthen public and private partnerships, when it comes to deterring and solving crimes. More details are expected to be shared during a press conference Thursday morning.
