The South Shore Line's train cars are getting some major upgrades. Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District crews are currently rehabbing 32 of the railroad's 1982-series cars for use on the future West Lake Corridor.
NICTD President Mike Noland says that will improve the ride quality as well as customer convenience, with features like USB chargers and on-board WiFi. "Our riders, when they go into the car, will basically look at a new — completely new — structure: new flooring, new seats, new bathrooms, new sidewalls," Noland told the NICTD Board Monday.
Meanwhile, the South Shore's mainline service will get 26 double-decker cars leased from Metra. "And as part of that lease, Metra is doing a full rebuild of those cars," Noland added.
He said they'll be part of the 76-car fleet that will operate on the existing line, following the Double Track project.
