The Gary City Council is considering how to address a shortage of paramedics.
Last week, council members considered an ordinance that would convert four currently vacant paramedic positions to lower-paying emergency medical technician positions, with the expectation that those EMTs would be sent to training and eventually become full paramedics. But council members ultimately wanted more time to talk to the fire chief, before taking a final vote.
The paramedic shortage is creating challenges not just in Gary, but at departments across Indiana and around the country.
