The Merrillville Town Council has finalized a tax abatement for the town's next industrial park. The 195-acre Silos at Sanders Farm development will contain five buildings along Mississippi Street. As part of the abatement, taxes will be phased in over the next 10 years, with no real property taxes at all for the first three years.
Council Member Shawn Pettit told the rest of the council Tuesday that discussions have begun on an economic development agreement. "They have requested a $1.7 million reimbursement for utility extension as part of the project. What I was recommending to the [redevelopment commission] was a piggyback to fund a public safety facility where our fire chief has identified Colorado Street as the desired location," Pettit explained.
Now, the council's public safety committee will continue discussing the new police and fire station, along with the fire station at 57th Avenue.
