Hammond Council considers banning stores from selling cats and dogs

Hammond pet shops may soon be prohibited from selling cats and dogs. An ordinance amending the city's pet sale rules was introduced during Monday's city council meeting.

Ordinance sponsor Barry Tyler Jr. said the new restrictions would take effect January 3, 2023. "So breeders will still be allowed to sell, but this prohibits the sale from those actual retail shops within our city. . . [Breeders] have to be licensed, of course," Tyler told the rest of the council Monday.

He said the measure would consolidate several ordinances, many of which haven't been updated since the late 1980s. It will be discussed further by the council's animal control committee on May 9.
