George Douglas is officially stepping down from the Valparaiso City Council, as he prepares to take over as the city's development director. His appointment to the position was announced on March 16, but before he could work for the city, he had to resign from his elected council position.
Now, city officials say Douglas is resigning, effective Friday, April 1. A caucus to choose a new at-large council member is expected to take place some time in April.
As development director, Douglas will earn between $70,000 and $102,000 a year. A measure to update the position in the city's salary ordinance was presented to the council Monday.
"Previously, that role was director of redevelopment but also handled economic development director duties, as well, as a separate position. We, with the new director, have combined those two roles," explained City Administrator Mike Jessen.
Douglas recused himself from voting on the first reading of the salary ordinance amendment. It will be up for final approval on April 11.
