Bridge repairs may continue to limit access to Odgen Dunes into April

Access to Odgen Dunes may remain limited for another couple weeks. Police Chief Jeremy Odgen says in a statement the engineer working on the bridge over Burns Waterway has found additional issues that need repair. That, combined with weather conditions, could delay the reopening to April 6.

The town's other access point is a railroad crossing at Hillcrest near U.S. 20. Odgen says Norfolk Southern has been planning its stops to avoid blocking the crossing. He says the only significant issue in recent days is when a train with a mechanical failure blocked the crossing for three hours.

If something like that happens again, Odgen says officers may escort traffic across the closed bridge, allowing one vehicle to pass at a time. He urges drivers to be patient and says anyone driving the wrong way around backed up traffic or running the crossing gates will be cited.
