Juneteenth is now an official holiday for Gary city employees. The city council Tuesday added June 20 to the city's 2022 holiday schedule, since June 19 falls on a Sunday this year.
Council President William Godwin says it was a collaborative effort between the council and the mayor's office. "We had a wonderful celebration last year, as the federal government and others began to more formally recognize Juneteenth, and we intend to do the same here in the City of Gary," Godwin said during Tuesday's meeting.
The holiday schedule was also amended to include Primary Election Day, Tuesday, May 3.
