All of Northwest Indiana is out of the red status on this week's COVID-19 map from the Indiana Department of Health, but the spread of the virus remains high in some areas. Lake and Jasper counties are now coded yellow, indicating a moderate spread. But Porter, Newton, and LaPorte counties are in the orange — better than they had been, but still a high level of spread.
The seven-day positivity rate has dropped to the single digits in Lake and Jasper counties, while Porter and Newton are at or above the state average. Porter County continues to have the region's highest vaccination rate, with more than 61 percent of eligible residents fully vaccinated. Newton County's is lowest locally at 41 percent.
The number of Hoosiers hospitalized with COVID-19 has dropped below 1,600, the lowest level since mid-November.
