The Valparaiso School Board will decide Monday whether to put an operating referendum on the May 3 ballot. If approved, the measure would renew the school district's 2015 referendum for another eight years but at a lower maximum rate, going from more than 20 cents per $100 of assessed valuation to less than 15 cents.
That money can then be used to supplement the Education Fund money allocated by the state. Specifically, the Valparaiso Community School Corporation says it would use it to manage class sizes and essential health and safety initiatives, retain teachers and staff, and fund academic and educationally related programs.
Monday's approval by the school board would be the first step. The proposed language would then go to the Department of Local Government Finance, Porter County Election Board, and finally, the district's voters on May 3.
Monday's special Valparaiso School Board meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. in the Valparaiso Community Schools Administration Building. It'll be livestreamed on the school corporation's YouTube channel.
