The City of Crown Point will not have to pay for the demolition of a dilapidated home. The city had selected a contractor to tear down 312 Oak Circle. But Attorney Joe Irak told the board of works Wednesday that the property owner has agreed to hire Ziese and Sons Excavating directly.
"So it's going to save the city the efforts and the expense to tear that property down, so it's moving along very quickly and smoothly," Irak said.
Otherwise, the city would have had to seek reimbursement by placing a lien on the property.
Irak says the only challenge is that there's still an electric line that has to be removed first, which could take NIPSCO at least three to four weeks.
"But it is moving in the right direction, and that's good news for everyone and it's great news for the homeowners around that area because that building will be removed and then they're going to try to sell it," Irak told board members.
Mayor David Uran says taxpayers will benefit -- not only from not having to pay for demolition -- but also from eventually having a new home on the tax rolls.
