October 11, 2013 — A new state organization is beginning its job of help young Hoosiers train for future careers.
The new Indiana Works Councils are conducting their first meetings this month.
Governor Mike Pence initiated the eleven regional councils to better align employer needs with current education.
Mike Zimmerman is director of career and technical education for the local Works Council as well as principal of the Hammond Area Career Center. He says the goal is to ensure that what students learn in the classroom is relevant to current job openings. Click to watch.
Zimmerman says while students need to be aware of potential training opportunities, parents and guidance counselors should also be informed about the various technical careers available.
