Women’s semis on tap

PARIS (AP) — Seventh-seed Maria Sharapova is taking on Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard in the first of the women’s semifinals at the French Open. Bouchard took the opening set of the match. The two have met twice before with Sharapova winning both including an early round match on the clay courts at Roland Garros last year.

Romania’s Simona Halep has been quietly making a name for herself on the women’s tour this year and can add to her accomplishments with a semifinal win over Germany’s Andrea Petkovic. It’s the first Grand Slam semifinal for both.

The fourth-seeded Halep has won seven titles over the past 13 months.
