Whiting Fire Under Investigation As Possible Arson
State fire marshals believe the fire that destroyed a three-story building in downtown Whiting on January 20th may have been set by some sort of incendiary device. The blaze destroyed Lubia’s Dresses and Events shop and seven apartments inside the century-old building at 119th and Sheridan streets.
Whiting fire officials previously confirmed the fire started in the dress shop before it spread to the upstairs apartments. The fire displaced more than a dozen residents. Whiting police Detectives said the fire marshals’ incident report found evidence indicating an ignitable liquid had been poured on the floor of the dress shop before the flames ignited.
Police say the dress shop owner’s been cooperative in the investigation, which was complicated by the fact that the roof and the subsequent floors all went down on top of each other.
