Veterans Day Events Pay Tribute Monday
November 8, 2013 — A variety of events Monday offer Region residents an opportunity to honor United States’ military veterans.
Purdue University North Central in Westville and Indiana University Northwest in Gary will each hold events with a special focus on students and faculty who have served in the military. Those will each begin at 11 a.m.
In Valparaiso, Congressman Pete Visclosky is the guest speaker for the Rotary Club’s veterans tribute at the Strongbow Inn that begins at 11:30 a.m.
The main branch of the LaPorte County Library will host a Monday 2 p.m. screening of “The Region Remembers: World War II,” a documentary produced by Lakeshore Public Media, featuring local World War II veterans sharing their war–time experiences.
The memorial for “Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom” will be dedicated at 10 a.m. in Hammond. The memorial is along the bike trail at Lyman Avenue and Douglas Street.
The City of Crown Point will pay tribute to local veterans on the steps of the Courthouse at 10:30 a.m.
Valparaiso’s Pines Retirement Community will honor veterans, including those living at the facility, at 1:30 p.m.
Great Clips salons will offer free haircuts or a gift card for a future haircut to all veterans on Monday. Proof of service is required.
Other retailers, such as JC Penney, offer veterans discounts, and Texas Roadhouse in Portage offers veterans a free lunch from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Veterans Day.
