Van Til to Resign Before Plea Change Hearing
December 2, 2013 — Lake County’s surveyor says today he plans to resign his position Thursday, before his change of plea hearing that day in federal court.
A spokesperson close to George Van Til says he’ll submit his resignation before a hearing to offer his guilty plea.
66-year-old Van Til submitted a plea agreement today in federal court for six counts of wire fraud. A federal indictment alleges that Van Til defrauded lake county of money and property by using county staff to work for his re-election as county surveyor.
The proposed plea agreement includes at least $10,000 in fines and six months in jail. Senior District Judge James Moody will consider the proposal in federal court in Hammond.
