Valparaiso University will once again offer lovers of jazz music a chance this year. to hear not only talented high school students but one of the top “smooth jazz” groups in the country.  The Lakeshore’s Chris Nolte has more on “Jazz Fest,” which begins in about three weeks…..
Music: David Sanborn Trio

Chris Nolte:  Valparaiso University holds its 2013 Jazz Fest on April 15th thru the 20th at the Harre Union Ballroom.  Harre Union director Larry Mosher says the headliner this year is the world-renowned David Sanborn Trio featuring Joey DeFrancesco and Byron Landham…

Larry Moser:  Joey’s been around for a number of years and it’s my favorite in a sense that he plays the Hammond B-3 organ, which in this day and age, you don’t hear much in many groups. But he does a great job, he’s known for that.  He also sings a little bit.  We think that he and Sanborn team together and it’ll be a great show.

Sanborn is considered to be an artist who continually pushes the limits and expands boundaries.  DeFrancesco emulates Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner and Thelonius Monk.  The David Sanborn Trio along with DeFranchesco and Landham will perform Saturday night, April 20th, in the Harre Union.  Mosher says tickets are going fast for what’s usually a sell-out performance at the Jazz Fest.

On Monday and Tuesday more than 250 high school students from around northwest Indiana will perform in a non-competitive setting.  The Dee Alexander Quartet performs in the Ballroom on Wednesday night.  Mosher says Alexander is one of the premier vocalists and songwriters in American music today.

On Thursday night, the 18th, the Valparaiso University Jazz Ensemble under the leadership of jazz studies coordinator Jeff Brown will perform the challenging music of Don Braden…..

Moser:  They’re gonna play with Don Braden, who’s a saxophonist as well as an educator.  He teaches, he’s appeared with the Boston Pops, he travels around the world with a variety of orchestras.  He’s very well known, Jeff Brown tells me he’s at the top of the list looking at saxophonists.

Braden will also perform with the Faculty Jazz Trio on Friday night, April 19th.

Valparaiso University’s held Jazz Fest for nearly 30 years.  In those three decades-plus, the event’s invited many influential jazz musicians to perform…including jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis, trumpet legend Maynard Ferguson and the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. Tickets are available thru the Harre Union.  Chris Nolte, Lakeshore News.
