U.S. Open begins

PINEHURST, N.C. (AP) — First round play is underway at the U.S. Open under overcast skies.

The first group in the 156-golfer field teed off on Pinehurst No. 2 at 6:45 a.m., eastern time. Among those starting play in the morning groups are six-time runner-up Phil Mickeslon, defending champ Justin Rose, former champs Rory McIlroy and Webb Simpson as well as No. 5 ranked Matt Kuchar.

Brandt Snedeker made the turn at 4-under, but posted a bogey on 10 and a double bogey on 11 to fall off the lead. Mickelson made the turn at 1-under par.

The weather forecast calls for a chance of showers and storms through the morning and later in the afternoon.
