SAN DIEGO (AP) — Former NFL player and professional boxer Charlie Powell has died at age 82. Powell was just 19 when he became one of the NFL’s first black players, spending five seasons for the San Francisco 49ers and two with the AFL’s Oakland Raiders from 1952 through 1961. He later climbed to fourth in the world heavyweight ranking with bouts against Cassius Clay and Floyd Patterson.
