A 43-year-old truck driver from Oregon is accused of beating an off-duty Merrillville police officer during a dispute over a parking citation in the Planned Parenthood clinic parking lot.

Craig Strand of Portland is also accused of trying to get to the officer’s weapon during the fight earlier this week.   Officer Curtis Minchuk shot Strand in the stomach.  He is recovering from his injuries at a local hospital. Minchuk was off-duty while providing security at Planned Parenthood.  Strand faces battery, disarming a law enforcement officer and resisting law enforcement.

Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force spokesman Bob Byrd says Minchuk’s decision to shoot Strand was justified.
