NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Yankees have retired four-time World Series champion manager Joe Torre’s No. 6. He is the 17th person to have his number retired by the most successful franchise in baseball history.

Torre took over as manager of the Yankees in 1996 and led them to their first World Series title since 1978. He led New York to 12 straight playoff appearances during his tenure, including three more championships from 1998-2000.
