Taxpayers’ Group Rallies Monday Night Against County Option Tax
A group that calls itself “Lake County Taxpayers Against Additional Taxation” is holding an open, non-partisan rally at six o’clock this evening at the 4-H Building at the County Fairgrounds in Crown Point. The rally’s purpose is to be a forum about the proposed Lake County option income tax and to let attendees sign a petition against the tax.
Lake County Commissioner Gerry Scheub and former Councilman Larry Blanchard will be on hand to answer questions.
The group set a goal of 1,000 signatures on petitions against the county option income tax that will be submitted to the County Council and County Commissioners. “Lake County Taxpayers Against Additional Taxation” says on its Facebook page that it is halfway toward that goal.
The petition takes issue with current county government expenses. It notes at least 2 townships have out of control spending with combined budgets over $16 million…and a drop in the county’s population over the past year, with no expectation of bringing in good paying jobs to attract residents and increase the tax base.
“Lake County Taxpayers Against Additional Taxation” petition against the COIT also asks its signers to pledge to vote against any County Councilman or County Commissioner in the next election who votes for any additional taxes before decreasing the county budget by cutting waste or selling assets.
