Edison retreated to Ogdensburg, NJ where he came up with a new process for extracting iron from low-grade ore. In the process of building and automating a plant to ensure that human hands would never touch the processed ore, Edison sunk $2 million into the venture before admitting defeat when the product’s value diminished with the discovery of a vast new source of high-grade ore in the Midwest.
