State Park Enthusiast Blogs As A Volunteer
July 9, 2013 — Young people are visiting Indiana state parks and blogging about their trips. Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Jill Sheridan reports on the volunteer ambassadors.
Katie Martin writes about her trip to Lincoln State Park where she learned about Abraham Lincoln’s boyhood in Indiana. Lance Gideon describes his horseback riding experience in Brown County complete with pictures and video. Both are youth ambassadors documenting their visits to Indiana state parks and reservoirs. The stories are posted at AmericasStateParks.org with the hope of promoting the great outdoors.
“It’s just a way to show people thru the media and use social networks to get the young involved in the outdoors, and get more people seeing these blogs and reading these stories — getting out there and experiencing the same thing.”
Jody Heaston is the volunteer coordinator with the Department of Natural Resources. She says Indiana has eight ambassadors this summer to help cover the state’s 32 parks and reservoirs. Next season another group of passionate volunteers will be recruited to share their experience.
