Sky’s Delle Donne to be Lyme disease ambassador
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Sky WNBA player Elena Delle Donne will be the first national ambassador for the Lyme Research Alliance.
The two-time all-star professional basketball player missed 17 games during the season because of a recurrence of Lyme disease. She has suffered from the disease since 2008. The Lyme Research Alliance made the announcement on Wednesday.
Delle Donne says she hopes to raise awareness and help find a cure.
Lyme disease is transmitted by the bite of tiny deer ticks and has a hallmark round, red rash. Antibiotics cure most people, but early symptoms are vague and flu-like. People who aren’t treated can develop arthritis, meningitis and some other serious illnesses.
